Chizzy Iwai leads LA Championship with course-record 63.
Japan's Chizzy Iwai tied the course record with a bogey-free 9-under-par 63 at the LA Championship in Tarzana, Calif., taking a two-stroke lead.
Iwai, ranked 20th in the Women's World Golf Rankings, had a stellar back nine, birdieing holes 11 through 15 and eagling the par-5 16th.
She also played the four par-fives at 4 under.
Iwai credited her early tee time and relaxed mindset for her strong performance.
South Korea's Sei Young Kim and Thailand's Patty Tavatanakit, along with two other Thai players, are two strokes behind at 7 under.
Tavatanakit, who struggled with consistency after a break, closed with birdies on four of her last six holes.
Lauren Coughlin, the recent Aramco Championship winner, also played bogey-free and finished at 6 under, tied for fifth with several others.
