BC and K'omoks First Nation sign treaty for self-governance on 3,442 hectares of Vancouver Island.

British Columbia has introduced legislation to implement a modern treaty with the K'ómoks First Nation following 30 years of negotiations. The agreement would confirm the First Nation's ownership of roughly 3,442 hectares of land and grant them self-government authority over laws concerning taxation, child welfare, and justice. Ratified by the community in March 2025, the treaty awaits federal approval and is expected to become effective by 2028.
