Jewish refugees used art school applications to escape Nazi persecution and gain visas to Jerusalem.
A newly discovered archive of art school applications reveals the desperate attempts of young Jews fleeing Nazi persecution in the 1930s and 1940s to gain admission to Jerusalem’s Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.
The collection, found in Jerusalem’s municipal archives, includes nearly 100 detailed applications from across Europe, with many non-professional artists using the process to secure visas and escape.
Only 49 were accepted, and just 27 ultimately arrived in Jerusalem, while others were lost to war or tragedy.
