Rare 1897 Georges Méliès film discovered in Michigan teacher's trunk.
A lost 1897 short film by French cinema pioneer Georges Méliès has been discovered in a century-old trunk belonging to a retired Michigan teacher.
The film, titled "Gugusse and the Automaton," was found among 10 reels donated to the Library of Congress, where experts confirmed it is a rare, 45-second copy of Méliès' early work.
The film, featuring a magician battling a growing automaton using early special effects, had been thought lost for over a century.
