Sinn Féin seeks a referendum on Ireland's neutrality and constitutional amendment.
Sinn Féin is calling for a public referendum on Ireland’s neutrality, arguing that any changes to the country’s long-standing policy should require a democratic mandate.
The party launched its "Protecting Ireland’s Neutrality" policy in Dublin, emphasizing the need to uphold the Triple Lock, which requires UN Security Council, government, and Dáil approval before deploying Irish peacekeepers.
Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald stated that altering neutrality would demand public input, and the party seeks a constitutional amendment affirming neutrality.
They also advocate for neutral nations like Ireland to have greater recognition in European Union law, highlighting their role in conflict resolution and diplomacy.
While not pledging immediate withdrawal from EU defence initiatives, Sinn Féin’s defence spokesperson Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire said a future Sinn Féin government would review existing commitments and disengage where possible, without making new ones.
