Former NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran was sentenced to three to nine years in prison for manslaughter after throwing a cooler at a fleeing suspect, Eric Duprey, in 2023. The suspect died after crashing his motorized scooter during a narcotics operation in the Bronx. Prosecutors argued Duran acted recklessly, but he claimed he attempted to protect fellow officers. He is the first former NYPD officer sentenced to prison for an on-duty death in over two decades.
