Octopus fossil reclassified as nautiloid relative after advanced imaging.
A fossil once thought to be the world's oldest octopus from 300 million years ago has been reclassified as a nautiloid relative after advanced imaging revealed it has 11 radula teeth instead of the seven or nine typical of octopuses.
The discovery, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, suggests octopuses evolved much later than previously believed and pushes back the record for soft tissue preservation of nautiloids.
