Western North Carolina communities hit by Hurricane Helene are now eligible for federal grants to rebuild business districts.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development allocated $40 million through the Commercial District Revitalization program for local governments and nonprofits in seven affected counties.
Grants range from $500,000 to $10 million and can be used for repairing commercial buildings, improving storefronts, and preparing sites for redevelopment.
Applications are open online until August 4, 2026.
