Judge dismisses PETA lawsuit against AKC over breed standards.
A New York judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by PETA against the American Kennel Club, ruling that a state law used to challenge government decisions does not apply to the case because PETA is not subject to the AKC’s authority.
The lawsuit sought to halt the AKC’s breed standards for dogs like pugs, French bulldogs, dachshunds, and Chinese shar-peis, which PETA argued promote harmful physical traits.
The AKC defended its standards, stating they are developed through collaboration with veterinary experts and have invested over $40 million in canine health research since 1995.
The judge did not rule on the validity of the health concerns.
PETA said it is reviewing legal options and continues to urge adoption from shelters over buying purebred dogs.
