A Madurai court sentenced nine police officers to death for the 2020 custodial killing of a father and son in Tamil Nadu. The victims were arrested during the COVID-19 lockdown for allegedly violating curfew rules but died from severe injuries sustained while in police custody. The court called the case a "rarest of rare" crime and ordered the officers to pay a combined compensation of Rs 1.40 crore to the victims' family.
