Half of the Costilla County Sheriff’s Office has been indicted on multiple charges, including abuse of a corpse and official misconduct. Sheriff Danny Sanchez and former Deputy Keith Schultz face counts related to mishandling unidentified human remains, which were reportedly placed in an unsecured paper grocery bag and left in an open area. Additionally, Undersheriff Cruz Soto and Sheriff’s son Sergeant Caleb Sanchez were indicted on assault charges connected to an incident involving a man experiencing a mental health crisis.
