A dedication ceremony for a historic First Nations marker tree in Owen Sound is set for April 22, 2026, honoring a 150- to 200-year-old sugar maple used by the Anishinaabek as a navigation aid. City council approved measures to protect the tree, including a protective buffer, soil and mulch application, and traffic rerouting, after the Saugeen Ojibway Nation highlighted stress from heavy foot traffic. The city will install interpretive signage and update the park’s heritage designation, aiming to educate the public on Indigenous history and reconciliation.
