Winnemem Wintu and agencies return endangered salmon to McCloud River after century hiatus, but state funding cuts threaten to halt the program.
Endangered winter-run Chinook salmon have returned to California’s McCloud River for the first time in over a century, thanks to a partnership between the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, state and federal agencies.
The project, launched in 2023, transported salmon from below Lake Shasta to cold, spring-fed waters historically used for spawning.
However, state funding tied to drought response has now expired, halting the program and threatening to end progress just as the fish began to return.
