Botanist finds rare Death Valley sage seeds after 15-year search for preservation.
Botanist Naomi Fraga of the California Botanic Garden has spent over 15 years attempting to collect seeds from the rare Death Valley sage, a plant native to California’s harsh desert environments, for preservation in a seed vault.
Despite repeated failures, Fraga found seeds for the first time since 2009 during a late-March expedition to the Nopah Range.
She plans to return with a team for a larger harvest, emphasizing the urgency of safeguarding the species amid growing concerns about climate change and habitat degradation.
