Putin warns Armenia cannot join both EU and Eurasian Economic Union.
Russian President Vladimir Putin told Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that Armenia cannot simultaneously be a member of both the European Union and the Russian-led Eurasian Economic Union, stating the two customs blocs are incompatible.
This warning highlights growing tensions as Armenia has shifted its foreign policy toward the West, especially after Russia did not intervene during Azerbaijan's 2023 offensive in Nagorno-Karabakh.
While Putin said Moscow accepts Armenia's interest in EU ties, he emphasized dual membership is not feasible.
Pashinyan acknowledged the incompatibility but said Armenia is pursuing both paths for now, asserting the final decision will be made by the Armenian people.
