Chang Ung, a former North Korean member of the International Olympic Committee, has died at age 87.
A former basketball player, he played a pivotal role in fostering sports diplomacy between North and South Korea, most notably brokering joint Olympic marches under a unification flag at the 2000 Sydney Games and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
The IOC honored his legacy with the Olympic Order in 2023, noting his use of sport to build bridges, though North Korea’s state media has not reported his death.
