Pearlie's Restaurant in Newport News has been named a Virginia state historic landmark, recognizing its role in the African American community and its inclusion in the "Negro Traveler's Green Book."
The restaurant, which has housed Black-owned businesses since the 1920s, was revived by owners Mikel and Evelyn Azeem.
The designation is part of a statewide survey by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources that documented 304 sites.
