Des Moines Fire Department Captain Joe Van Haalen was honored by the Iowa chapter of the American Red Cross as a "Hero of the Heartland" for rescuing a 7-year-old boy from the Des Moines River.
Van Haalen entered the water to pull the child to safety and later received the Red Cross Medal of Honor, an award not given in over a decade.
Colleagues Ben Wafful and Marco Matias were also recognized for their roles in the successful rescue.
