Romero Games co-founders compare current gaming industry to 1983 crash due to widespread layoffs.
Veteran game developers Brenda and John Romero say the current gaming industry is in a worse state than the 1983 crash, describing it as "crashier."
The couple, whose studio Romero Games recently downsized from 110 to nine employees after losing Microsoft's funding, highlighted widespread layoffs and uncertainty.
They noted that while the 1983 crash saw a 97% drop in revenue, today's crisis is driven by the soaring cost of AAA development, now estimated at over $300 million, making even successful titles vulnerable to cuts.
