Yale researcher Dr. Richard Root killed by crocodile in Botswana.
A renowned American infectious disease specialist was fatally attacked by a large crocodile while canoeing on the Limpopo River in Botswana in 2006.
Dr. Richard Root, a former Yale University chairman and researcher, had been invited by the country's Ministry of Health to combat the HIV crisis.
During a weekend trip with his wife, the attack occurred suddenly when a crocodile, estimated at 4.5 meters long, dragged Root from his canoe and submerged him.
His body was recovered four days later near the site of the attack.
