A 19-year-old Toronto man denies killing Joe Cabigon in a 2023 Sudbury bar shooting, claiming he was forced into crime and handed a gun during an argument.
A 19-year-old Toronto man, charged with first-degree murder in the 2023 shooting of Joe Cabigon at a Sudbury bar, testified he ran away from home at 16 to escape abuse, dropped out of school, and became involved in drug trafficking.
He said he was sent to Thunder Bay to sell drugs, later moved to Sudbury, and was taken in by a local dealer who assaulted him, showed him violent videos, and boasted of past murders.
The teen claimed he was at the bar during an argument, had a blue satchel with a handgun handed to him, but denied shooting Cabigon.
Police found the satchel, a gun with filed-off serial numbers, a shell casing, a cellphone, and sweatpants near the scene.
The co-accused dealer remains at large.
The accused, tried as an adult under a publication ban, pleaded not guilty.
The trial continues.
