WWII veteran Glenn Fisher, 99, seeks Purple Heart for March 1945 Rhine River injury, citing shrapnel in body and witness accounts despite missing records.
At 99, WWII veteran Glenn Fisher is seeking the Purple Heart before his 100th birthday, claiming he was wounded in March 1945 during the Rhine River crossing.
Enlisting at 16 by falsifying his age, he served in England, France, and the Netherlands.
He says he was struck by shrapnel in an airburst that killed two comrades and injured 14 others, though official records list the injury date as June, not March.
A piece of shrapnel found in his body during a 2023 surgery—believed to have been there over 80 years—has since been lost.
While medical records confirm hospitalizations, no direct documentation supports his injury date.
His friend and advocate, Jeff Thoke, says the lack of official proof is the main obstacle, but they hope the Army will consider circumstantial evidence and Fisher’s testimony before his milestone birthday.
