Washington launches free "Blue Envelope" program to help neurodivergent drivers during traffic stops.
Washington has launched a free, voluntary "Blue Envelope" program to help reduce stress and risks during traffic stops for neurodivergent drivers, including those with autism, ADHD, and other conditions.
The initiative, signed into law by Governor Bob Ferguson, provides envelopes at licensing offices containing guidance for both drivers and officers on managing interactions calmly and safely, with tips to avoid loud noises, bright lights, and physical contact.
The program aims to prevent misunderstandings and potential escalations, especially given higher rates of police stops and arrests among autistic individuals.
Modeled after similar efforts in about a dozen states, Washington expects to issue around 18,000 envelopes annually.
