Texas awards $5M to nine universities to expand forensic psychiatry training.
Texas has awarded $5 million in grants to nine university medical centers, including Texas Tech Health Sciences Center in Lubbock and El Paso, to expand forensic psychiatry training.
Each institution will receive about $555,000 to develop or enhance one-year fellowship programs that prepare licensed physicians to provide psychiatric evaluations and treatment in civil, criminal, and administrative legal contexts.
The funding, administered by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and announced by Governor Greg Abbott, aims to strengthen the state’s mental health workforce, improve access to psychiatric care, and enhance public safety by increasing expert input in the justice system.
