Scout troop recycled 1,600 trees for fish habitat at Canyon Ferry Reservoir in April 2026.
Scout Troop 214 collected about 1,600 Christmas trees in Helena in January 2026, repurposing them for a conservation project to boost yellow perch habitat at Canyon Ferry Reservoir.
The trees, bundled and weighted, were deployed in April to create shelter for spawning and juvenile fish, supporting the long-running “Pines for Perch” program.
The effort, praised by FWP officials, helps counteract declining tree donations due to rising artificial tree use.
FWP encourages residents to cut legal, permitted real trees from public lands and donate them to sustain the initiative.
