Randy Bennett is leaving Saint Mary's to become Arizona State's head coach, ending a 25-year tenure with 12 NCAA Tournaments and a 589-228 record.
Randy Bennett, who coached Saint Mary's for 25 seasons and led the Gaels to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, is leaving to become head coach at Arizona State, according to multiple media reports.
The 63-year-old, a Mesa, Arizona native, is finalizing a five-year contract and will earn over $3 million in his first season.
He informed his team of the decision Monday and will replace Bobby Hurley, whose contract was not renewed after 11 seasons.
Under Bennett, Saint Mary's made the NCAA Tournament in each of the past five years and won at least a share of four straight West Coast Conference titles, including a Sweet 16 run in 2010.
The Gaels were eliminated in the first round of the 2026 tournament by Texas A&M.
Bennett finishes with a 589-228 record and will be succeeded by associate head coach Mickey McConnell, who played for him and has been on the staff since 2019.
