Queensland’s ban on gender-affirming hormone treatments for youth may force psychologist Olivia Donaghy to resign, threatening the state’s first children’s gender clinic.
A top Queensland psychologist, Olivia Donaghy, who helped establish the state’s first children’s gender clinic, is considering resigning after the government extended its ban on stage one and two hormone therapies for transgender youth.
With nearly two decades of experience, Donaghy says the restriction undermines evidence-based care and risks turning the clinic into a counseling-only service that could inadvertently promote conversion therapy, despite it being illegal.
She criticized the government’s decision to delay access until 2031, noting ongoing Australian research already underway.
The ban allows current patients to continue treatment, but Donaghy warns the clinic may effectively close once those patients finish care, leaving transgender youth without vital medical support.
