Philly proposes $1 per ride tax on Uber and Lyft in 2027 to fund schools and prevent staff layoffs.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker proposes a $1 per ride tax on Uber and Lyft starting January 1, 2027, to generate $48 million annually and help close a $300 million structural deficit in the city’s public schools.
The revenue would aim to prevent layoffs of 340 staff, including 130 teachers and 110 school workers, and fund free SEPTA passes for eligible school employees.
A pilot program would help residents clear unpaid parking tickets, and funds would not cover school closures.
Rideshare companies oppose the tax, warning of higher costs for riders.
City Council will vote on the measure by April 21.
