Over 51,000 assault-style guns turned in to Canada’s buyback program before its March 31 deadline.
More than 51,000 firearms have been reported to Canada’s federal gun buyback program ahead of its March 31 deadline, with Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree calling the progress “cautiously optimistic.” The program, launched in January 2026, offers compensation for turning in or deactivating assault-style weapons like the AR-15 and Ruger Mini-14, banned since May 2020.
Despite falling short of the government’s estimated 136,000 eligible firearms, officials maintain the figure and continue defending the ban in ongoing legal challenges, following court rulings upholding the policy.
The initiative targets military-style weapons, not hunting or sporting firearms, according to government and survivor advocates.
