India’s human rights body demands answers on insurance discrimination and a school ceiling fan injury.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed India’s insurance regulator, IRDAI, to respond within 15 days over allegations that people with hearing and speech disabilities are being denied life insurance, citing potential discrimination.
The NHRC also took suo motu action after a ceiling fan fell in a Rajasthan school on March 16, injuring two students, and demanded a detailed report from local officials within two weeks on the students’ condition and disciplinary measures.
The Commission warned that if verified, the incidents could constitute serious human rights violations.
