India launches first major cold desert river restoration in Leh, planting 2,000 trees to boost forest cover and combat degradation.
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena launched the Indus River Green Corridor Eco-Restoration Project in Leh on March 24, 2026, marking India’s first large-scale cold desert riverbank restoration effort.
The initiative, involving nearly 1,000 indigenous saplings along the riverbank and 1,000 fruit trees along city roads, aims to combat land degradation, prevent erosion, boost biodiversity, and increase Ladakh’s forest cover from under 1% to 5% within two years.
Supported by government agencies, military forces, local communities, the Spituk Monastery, and the University of Ladakh, the project uses science-based techniques like solar-powered drip irrigation.
It aligns with national goals to restore 2.6 million hectares of degraded land by 2030 and promotes the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign.
