Herreid, SD, revitalized by $2.2M in grants and local efforts, rebuilt homes and services, attracting new residents and stabilizing the economy.
Herreid, South Dakota, a town of about 400 residents, is seeing a revival through a housing and infrastructure initiative led by retired banker Dick Werner and the Herreid Area Housing Development.
Since 2016, the group has secured over $2.2 million in grants and raised more than $430,000 through local loans and fundraising to build or rehabilitate homes, including five speculative homes sold before completion, 16 apartment units, and improvements to 18 existing homes.
A new three-unit apartment building is under development with $700,000 in grant funding, and eight serviced lots are being prepared for single-family homes.
These efforts have attracted new residents, helped reopen essential services like a grocery store and medical clinic, and stabilized the local economy.
