Scotland adds June 15 holiday for World Cup qualifier, unique across UK.
The UK has confirmed 2026 bank holidays, with Scotland receiving an extra day on June 15 to celebrate its men’s football team qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1998.
This special holiday, approved by Buckingham Palace under the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971, does not apply to England, Wales, or Northern Ireland.
While Good Friday (April 3), May 4, May 25, Christmas Day (December 25), and a substitute Boxing Day (December 28) are shared across the UK, other dates vary: Easter Monday is not a holiday in Scotland, Northern Ireland observes the Battle of the Boyne on July 13, Scotland’s summer bank holiday is August 3, and St Andrew’s Day is celebrated on November 30.
The addition of June 15 marks a unique, one-off recognition of a national sporting achievement, creating operational challenges for cross-border services.
Escocia añade el 15 de junio de vacaciones para la Copa Mundial de clasificación, único en todo el Reino Unido.
