Sarnia council debates councillor's controversial remarks on Indigenous mural and calls for First Nations consultation.
A special Sarnia city council meeting on March 22, 2026, addressed contentious remarks by councillor Bill Dennis about a new Indigenous-themed mural at city hall and comments targeting Aamjiwnaang First Nation Chief Janelle Nahmabin.
Mayor Mike Bradley said Dennis’s criticism of the mural as “virtue signalling” and his opposition to a UNDRIP-aligned working group that would require consultation with First Nations on economic development were divisive and damaging to community relations.
Dennis, who questioned the mural’s cost and relevance, argued it misrepresented Sarnia and threatened municipal sovereignty.
Chiefs from Walpole Island and Kettle and Stony Point First Nations called for an integrity investigation.
While Dennis maintained his statements were factual and not racist, Nahmabin expressed gratitude for community support and praised the mural as a meaningful step toward unity.
The city continues to grapple with issues of Indigenous representation and reconciliation.
