NSW police fined and cautioned 170 and 99 people, arrested one for riding a disqualified, unregistered e-bike, and seized bikes during a crackdown.
NSW Police issued 170 fines and 99 cautions during a two-day e-bike and e-scooter crackdown in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire and surrounding areas, with 21 traffic charges and five criminal charges laid. Five riders tested positive for drugs, including a 25-year-old man arrested for riding while disqualified on an unregistered, uninsured e-bike without pedals or a helmet and having his bike seized. A 14-year-old was warned under the Young Offenders Act. Over 250 breath tests and 26 drug tests were conducted. Police warn of ongoing enforcement, citing rising injuries and dangerous behavior, and are pushing for new laws to allow faster seizure of illegal e-bikes exceeding 25km/h.
