On March 23, 2026, a Tamil Nadu court convicted nine police officers in the 2020 custodial deaths of trader P. Jayaraj and his son J. Benicks, who were detained during the COVID-19 lockdown for allegedly violating curfew rules.
The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai found the accused guilty of torture and murder while in custody, following a CBI investigation that revealed prolonged abuse, false charges, and evidence tampering.
The case, which drew national attention, stemmed from a dispute over a mobile shop, with the men reportedly beaten and forced to clean their own blood.
One accused died during the trial.
Sentences will be announced on March 30.
