Nine Tamil Nadu cops convicted in 2020 custodial deaths of trader Jayaraj and son Benicks during lockdown.
A Tamil Nadu court convicted nine police officers in the 2020 custodial deaths of trader P. Jayaraj and his son J. Benicks, who were detained during the COVID-19 lockdown for allegedly violating curfew rules. The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Madurai found the accused guilty of torture and murder while in custody, following a CBI investigation that revealed prolonged abuse, false charges, and evidence tampering. The case, which drew national attention, stemmed from a dispute over a mobile shop, with the men reportedly beaten and forced to clean their own blood. One accused died during the trial. Sentences will be announced on March 30.
