Michael Chalmers, 36, faces rape and murder charges in the 2024 death of Yuko, a 62-year-old migrant sex worker, based on CCTV and forensic evidence, with a trial decision pending.
Michael James Chalmers, 36, faces charges of rape and murder in the death of Yuko, a 62-year-old Asian migrant sex worker found dead at a Melbourne brothel in November 2024.
Prosecutors presented CCTV footage showing Chalmers entering her room, allegedly using a headlock and restraining her before leaving 30 minutes later while she was unconscious or deceased.
Two pathologists concluded she likely died from strangulation or smothering, with injuries consistent with rape.
The prosecution described the act as “quite shocking” and argued the case, though circumstantial, should go to trial.
Defence barrister Barnaby Johnston challenged the evidence, citing no DNA links and Yuko having seen other clients, calling the prosecution’s claims “utter guesswork” and urging dismissal of all charges.
Magistrate Vincenzo Caltabiano will decide by March 31 whether to commit Chalmers to stand trial in the Supreme Court.
