In February 2026, Maharashtra approved a ₹55.8 crore project to restore the historic Chavdar Tale tank in Mahad, polluted for decades, with a continuous purification system inspired by the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
The effort, part of the state’s “Year of Social Equality and Harmony” and led by Minister Sanjay Shirsat, aims to honor the 1927 Mahad Satyagraha led by Dr. B.R.
Ambedkar, when Dalits asserted their right to public water.
The project, to be implemented by the Mahad Municipal Council with technical support, marks a symbolic step in preserving Ambedkar’s legacy and advancing social justice.
