A Hong Kong ex-police chief and a UK Border Force officer stand trial in London on charges of spying for China, denying all allegations.
Bill Yuen, a 65-year-old retired Hong Kong police superintendent and dual Chinese-British national, is on trial at the Old Bailey alongside Border Force official Peter Wai, 38, on charges of foreign interference and assisting a foreign intelligence service under the UK’s National Security Act.
Yuen denies directing Wai to spy on Hong Kong dissidents, pro-democracy activists, or British politicians, claiming he hired Wai through a private security firm to provide protection for the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London after protests and vandalism, including flare attacks and defaced judicial photos, targeted the building.
He said he believed Wai was a serving police officer until his arrest and testified that a protester cursed him and his family to die during a 2023 demonstration outside the Guildhall.
Both men deny all charges, including unlawful entry and misuse of government systems.
The trial continues.
