Dave Davies, guitarist for the Kinks, strongly criticized musician Moby for calling the band’s 1970 hit “Lola” transphobic, calling the remarks “highly offensive” and inaccurate.
Davies defended the song, written by his late brother Ray Davies, saying it was groundbreaking in portraying a transgender woman and was embraced by LGBTQ+ figures like drag artist Jayne County and the Cockettes, a group that toured with the band.
He emphasized the Kinks’ supportive history with gender-nonconforming communities and questioned why Moby would condemn what Davies sees as a culturally significant, innocent song.
Moby has not publicly responded.
