A BBC doctor says "cortisol face" and "cortisol belly" myths are false, linking them only to rare medical conditions, not normal stress.
Dr. Xand van Tulleken, a BBC doctor, has debunked viral social media claims linking cortisol to "cortisol face" or "cortisol belly," calling the idea "total garbage."
Appearing on BBC Morning Live, he explained that while cortisol is a vital hormone involved in stress response and metabolism, it does not cause facial or abdominal fat gain in normal circumstances.
He clarified that such symptoms only occur in rare conditions like Cushing’s syndrome, where extremely high cortisol levels result from tumors or steroid use.
Dr. van Tulleken warned against misleading supplement marketing based on these myths and urged the public to rely on scientific evidence rather than oversimplified health trends.
