U.S. tourists arrested in India for flying a drone near a restricted coast guard site.
Two U.S. tourists, Katie Michelle Phelps, 32, and Christopher Ross Harvey, 35, were arrested in Fort Kochi, India, for flying a drone near the Coast Guard Headquarters, a restricted area due to its proximity to naval and coast guard facilities.
The incident occurred on Saturday when tourism police observed them recording video with the drone in a red zone where drone use is prohibited for national security reasons.
The pair were taken into custody, released with notices to appear, and the drone and a laptop were seized.
Authorities filed charges under India’s Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Aircraft Act, and Drone Rules.
The case highlights the risk of tourists unknowingly violating local drone regulations in sensitive areas.
