Three European bison were killed in a train collision in Poland’s Bialowieza Forest on March 20, 2026.
Three rare European bison were killed Sunday morning in Poland’s Bialowieza Forest, a UNESCO-listed primeval woodland, after crossing train tracks near Witowo.
The collision occurred at 7 a.m. when a herd was struck by the “Zubr” line train traveling between Bialystok and Warsaw, with no passenger injuries and the train resuming service about an hour and a half later.
The incident, involving three animals at once, is considered highly unusual despite occasional bison-train collisions.
The European bison, once near extinction due to hunting and habitat loss, was revived through reintroduction efforts and now numbers about 1,200 in Poland’s portion of the forest, a vital biodiversity and carbon sink.
