Jennifer Pan pleaded guilty to manslaughter in her mother’s 2010 death during a staged home invasion, avoiding retrial.
Jennifer Pan, 39, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2010 death of her mother during a staged home invasion, avoiding a retrial.
Her defense argued that York Regional Police detectives, including retired lead investigator Bill Courtice, tainted the jury pool by participating in the 2024 Netflix documentary *What Jennifer Did*, where Courtice called her actions “as evil as it gets.” The defense claimed police encouraged the documentary and violated Canada’s tradition of judicial impartiality.
Pan, who had been convicted of first-degree murder in 2014 and had that conviction overturned, admitted she intended to kill her abusive father but should have foreseen her mother’s death.
She received a life sentence concurrent with her existing life sentence for attempted murder, making her eligible for parole.
Jennifer Pan se declaró culpable de homicidio en la muerte de su madre en 2010 durante una invasión en el hogar, evitando un nuevo juicio.
