Japan confirms release of one detained national from Iran; diplomatic efforts ongoing for second detainee.
One of two Japanese nationals detained in Iran has been released and returned to Japan, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi announced on March 22, 2026.
The individual, held since 2025, arrived from Azerbaijan in good health.
Motegi said repeated diplomatic appeals to Iran contributed to the release, while efforts continue for the second detainee, reportedly an NHK journalist arrested in January and held in Evin Prison.
The Japanese government confirmed both were safe but provided no further details on their identities, the charges, or whether the cases are connected.
