Canberra expands e-scooter and e-bike fleet by 225%, adding 1,500–3,500 devices starting April 16, following safety concerns.
The ACT government has awarded a new contract to Lime, expanding Canberra’s shared e-scooter and e-bike fleet by 225 percent, increasing the minimum fleet size to 1,500 devices—up to 3,500—starting April 16.
The new fleet will include a mix of e-bikes and e-scooters, with e-bikes limited to 25 km/h and classified as power-assisted pedal cycles, giving riders the same rights as cyclists.
The government emphasized these vehicles must be primarily human-powered.
The move follows safety concerns, including 623 hospital visits linked to e-scooter use over 15 months, with some requiring surgery.
Lime, which operates e-bikes in Sydney, will use a GPS-enabled app to help users locate bikes.
