An avalanche alert was issued for elevations above 3,500 meters in Sikkim’s Gangtok and Pakyong districts on March 21, 2026, due to heavy snowfall and unstable conditions, urging residents and visitors to avoid non-essential travel.
The warning, coordinated by the IMD and Sikkim’s disaster authority, follows severe thunderstorms on March 15 that damaged power lines, causing outages in Rongli, Rhenock, and other areas.
The DGRE also warned of snowfall and avalanches in high-altitude Uttarakhand regions, with higher risks in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh.
