Australia’s PBO to issue weekly party promise summaries during caretaker periods to boost transparency.
Australia’s Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) has been recommended to publish weekly summaries of major political parties’ election commitments during caretaker periods, following a post-2025 election review led by former public servant Martin Parkinson.
The goal is to enhance transparency by giving voters a centralized, up-to-date view of party promises, helping distinguish serious commitments from campaign rhetoric.
The PBO would compile and release the promises without requiring immediate costings, which would be impractical.
The proposal, inspired by Victoria’s system, aims to improve accountability and public understanding.
The PBO, established in 2012, is also advised to strengthen outreach to parliamentarians, staff, and journalists, and address growing pressure from minor parties and independents for costings, which could strain resources without additional funding.
The agency is reviewing all 23 recommendations.
El PBO de Australia publicará resúmenes semanales de promesas de partidos durante los períodos interinos para impulsar la transparencia.
