Two Italian anarchists, Sara Ardizzone and Alessandro Mercogliano, died in a blast at a Rome cabin in June 2022 while reportedly preparing a bomb, Italian authorities confirmed.
The explosion, caused by 50 liquefied petroleum gas cylinders, was linked to their activism in support of Alfredo Cospito, a 58-year-old anarchist serving a 20-year sentence under strict "41-bis" prison conditions.
Cospito, held for past attacks including parcel bombs, is due a court decision in May 2026 on easing his detention.
Authorities believe the planned action was a protest, not intended to cause fatalities, and are treating the incident as a terrorism-related investigation.
