Two Indigenous chiefs demand an investigation into Sarnia councillor Bill Dennis over offensive social media remarks criticizing a mural and threatening to end Indigenous reconciliation efforts.
Two First Nations chiefs, Leela Thomas and Kimberly Bressette, have called for an integrity probe into Sarnia city councillor Bill Dennis over his social media criticism of a new city hall mural honoring Indigenous rights and the city’s UNDRIP partnership.
Dennis labeled the mural “virtue signaling,” a characterization both chiefs found offensive and dismissive of Indigenous culture and reconciliation efforts.
They condemned his use of vulgar language and threats toward Indigenous leaders, including Aamjiwnaang Chief Janelle Nahmabin, and his vow to dismantle the UNDRIP partnership, which aims to strengthen relationships through treaty education and consultation.
This follows a 2024 finding that Dennis violated conduct rules over similar remarks.
The chiefs urged city council to uphold accountability and respect in public office.
